"Mental Fitness"


Hello Everyone:
Has I begin to think of the different exercises and practice sessions that I’ve completed in this course and try to choose only two of them that I’ve profited from, it was hard to choose because I’ve gained much from each one.  But sense I have to choose just two I would have to say that “The Loving-Kindness” and “Integral Practice-Life-as-Practice” has taught me the most.  Learning how to set realistic goals and reaching for them, and knowing that it is the action of running the race, not winning the race that counts.  One may not always reach the goals, one set, but making the effort to reach them with intent, which becomes most important.  If I do not reach my set goals maybe I set the bar to high, or not high enough, that is were the reassessment comes in;  learn for my mistakes and see them as chances for my personal growth and not a mountain I can’t climb.
I have chosen to use these in my goals to loose weight and stop smoking.  These both could be overwhelming goals to overcome, when I’ve had them in my life for a long time, but by setting small goals and making sure to “pat myself” on the back for each small goals reached I insure my success.  I’ve begin with the “I can” statement instead of a “I can’t statement.”  “I can eat more vegetables.”  I can do a fast-paced walk for 15 minutes a day.”  “I can smoke 5 less cigarette a day.”

    Goal setting is the right thing to do when we’re trying to accomplish something for ourselves. I like how you said that you’re changing the statement “no I can’t” to “I can” because when you start out with a negative statement you’ll get negative result. When teaching my students the martial arts one of the first things I tell them is that the words “no I can’t” are not allowed in the studio. As I tell them nothing ventured nothing gain and if you don’t even give it a try you’ll never know is you can do it or not. I set students and personal training clients with achievable goals at first in building their self-esteem and confidence then I make the goal harder as I see them getting stronger and believing in what they’re doing and why they’re doing it. To realize that what you’re doing is about you and no one else is the beginning of accomplishing your goals. Once you see the initial change that’s when everything changes, because that’s when it then becomes like a drug, very addicting making things easier in accomplishing your goals.
    Darlene, focus on your goals and know that you matter not just to your family, but to others around you. The world would not be the world without people from different cultures, lifestyles, gender, and those looking for change in helping others in the world make a change.     Great post! I definitely think you are on the right track as far as setting small goals to help you reach a big one. I like what you said, that it is not winning the race that counts but the action of running the race. Great quote to live by! I could use this in my own exercise program; in my weightlifting, I could make a goal of what I want to lift in the next week or two and slowly add more weight to my goal. Thanks for sharing!

  3. Hi Darlene,

    Definitely set goals that are attainable. I think that you should start with one thing at a time though. Like losing weight and then stopping smoking. If you try and do too much all at once you can get overwhelmed. I always think what I am capable of doing. I salute you for trying to do those things to help yourself become healthier.
